Title: Ultra Wide Angle Lens - How to Use It
Post by: theqca on March 15, 2014, 10:09:17 AM
How to Use an Ultra Wide Angle Lens

A number of photography articles and books get into too much of a theoretical discussion about photography instead of getting straight to the point. They?ll tell you how an Ultra wide angle lens is made and how it works along with graphs and all that jazz. They don?t really tell you how to use the UWA. I thought a write-up on how to use these lenses would help.

So now that you?ve got your hands on a UWA you are going to be tempted to take some photos and that?s when you are going to get a bit of a start - You?ve paid a good amount of money for this lens however the photos you take are nothing like those photos you saw on the internet.

Infact if you are not using a UWA correctly (and just using it like you would use ur "kit" lens) and if you?ve still managed to get some good photos - its more to do with God being on your side rather than skill and technique.

Test and Learn your new UWA

Shoot indoors and learn to use this tilt / distortion that this lens gives.

Horizon placement

Move the horizon off centre and then tilt your camera ? don?t hold it in level with the ground. Move it up and down and see how the lines / foreground object move or tilt and the effect this has on your composition.

Look for Lines

The photo needs some ?lines? which will help the composition. Learn to see these lines and include them in your frame

Very well written and covers a lot - infact there are a lot of sentences that convey a lot of experience with UWAs ... I'd suggest reading each line once again.
If I had to add more to it, I'd provide some examples of what NOT to do - that's the key. What NOT to do.

Quote
Foreground
Make sure that the photograph has something that acts as a foreground interest or anchor point. If you don?t have this in your photograph then your photo will look like a photograph that has a lot of ?nothing?. This foreground object could be rocks, flowers, shrubs, trees etc ? anything that catches your eye.
Quote

This bit of information along with the note on UWAs NOT being to "Get it all in the frame" is key.

What UWAs allow you to do is to to have a strong piece and foreground AND to provide a context to it.
To explain further: The UWA allows you to get very, very close to the key point of interest - this makes it appear very large in the frame while at the same time, as it's very wide, it allows you to place that key point of interest in context of the surrounding area.
So you get a foreground AND a background. There you have 2 out of 3 key parts to a landscape - you just need to find a strong middleground (often lines) that lead you from the foreground to the background.

nice info Ayaz, thanks a ton

what are ur view on manual ultrawide lens like Samyang or Rokinon, how to use those at its best
Title: Re: Ultra Wide Angle Lens - How to Use It

Thanks guys...

@drgap - I've not used samyang or rokinon UWA's so cant comment. I've used manual Fisheye's and to be honest I dont find manual focus to be an issue..infact for most landscapes you dont really need to "focus" as leaving the lens at infinity focus usually works.

I'd suggest you compare the cost difference between a manual UWA and pit it against the options available from canon / nikon / sigma / tokina..if its not all that much of a difference then id suggest you stick to a lens that offers all electronic communication with the camera including focus and metering.

The choice of a UWA becomes a bit of a problem if you are using a full frame since the sigma 10-20 etc wont work....what camera body do you have?

6 D n a 70 D

For the 70D I would personally choose a sigma 10-20 as a value for money lens unless need a something like a f2.8 - I personally dont find the need for a 2.8 UWA lens - depends on your shooting style and the type of photos you intend taking.

Its the 6D that you are going to have a bit of trouble with me thinks..Lightwave is in a similar dilemma in terms of getting a good value for money FF UWA :)

Ayaz, for 6D one can use 17-40mm f4/L. Its a good value for money lens. There is a much costlier option, 16-35mm f/2.8L II. Normally 17mm with f/4 at the widest end gives very good results. My experience is very good.

@drgap: I just got the Samyang 14mm two days back and I have put up a few pics and initial impressions here:

I love UWA lenses and the distorted perspective. A good photographer can use these qualities to their advantage. More than any other type of lens, I prefer to shoot with my 14-24mm f/2.8. Even though I have sold all my Nikon gear, I cannot bring myself to sell this lens despite difficulties with using filters. It is just better than the 16-35mm or any other lens out there.

I normally disagree with almost everything Ken Rockwell says but his write-up on UWA really resonated and inspired me to buy this particular lens. I am also looking to get the 10-24mm for my Fuji X-T1 to see if it can take over from the 14-24 Nikkor.
